An electrocardiogram — abbreviated as EKG or ECG — is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat. With each beat, an electrical impulse (or “wave”) travels through the heart. This wave causes the muscle to squeeze and pump blood from the heart. A normal heartbeat on ECG will show the timing of the top and lower chambers.
The AHA publishes the Guidelines for CPR and ECC, which set the standard for lifesaving first aid and CPR protocols and products around the world and make up the basis for our own lifesaving course materials used to teach first aid CPR and advanced cardiovascular care to millions of healthcare providers, caregivers and community members each year.

EKGs help your doctor detect or diagnose a wide variety of heart problems, from irregular heartbeats to heart attack. He or she may order an EKG for the following reasons. Because they cost little and don't require incisions or needles, doctors often use EKGs to screen for heart disease in people who have no symptoms.
To get an EKG technician certification, the first step is usually earning a high school diploma or its equivalent. CPR is often taught in a cardiovascular technology program. EKG technicians receive training before testing for special certification.
12 Lead EKG Class. Course is designed for personnel who have had a basic EKG course. The course focuses on how to use the 12 lead EKG to gain knowledge of heart function, signs of MI, axis deviation, electrolyte imbalances, and other diagnosis. The course has a flexible format with two units for ECG and Pharmacology.
What Happens During an EKG. During an EKG, a technician will attach 10 electrodes with adhesive pads to the skin of your chest, arms, and legs. Men may have chest hair shaved to allow a better connection. You will lie flat while the computer creates a picture, on graph paper, of the electrical impulses traveling through your heart.
