1. Wizard. The more D&D changes, the more it stays the same. Despite the powerful abilities brought by every other class, from the bard’s flexibility to the druid’s infinity mammoth, no character class tops the raw power of the wizard.
2. Druid. More than any other class, the druid earns its high spot thanks to a single subclass: Circle of the Moon. The gulf in power between Circle of the Moon and the other subclasses is one of the widest I’ve ever seen.
3. Bard. From the laughingstock of early editions to one of the best classes in the game, bard has come a long way. This class can fit almost any role you want it to play.
4. Paladin. The strongest martial class in the game, paladins are the best mix of offense and defense 5E has to offer. Large hit dice, heavy armor, and the best saves available, thanks to Aura of Protection, paladins are equipped for any type of danger.
5. Cleric. Speaking of taking advantage of the cleric spell list, the cleric sneaks into my top five. With access to heavy armor and spells like Spirit Guardians, clerics deal great area damage and are difficult to hurt.
6. Sorcerer. If I had made this list before Xanathar’s Guide to Everything was printed, the sorcerer would have ranked much lower. With a reduced spell list compared to the wizard and a major bottleneck created by how few spells it learns, the original sorcerer had little to recommend it outside of its brief power spikes from Twin Spelling buffs like Polymorph.
7. Fighter. Often considered the default class of D&D 5E, I was happy that the fighter made it to the middle of this list. A monoclassed fighter is a dependable source of damage that is also good at protecting itself.
8. Warlock. The first full caster we see on this list, and, sadly, I doubt it is a surprise to many. The warlock is a perplexing class to me. It has so much front-loaded on its early levels* that, much like the barbarian, they feel fantastic.
9. Barbarian. Continuing the run of martial characters, we have the barbarian. The class itself is fairly straightforward and so is the reason for its inclusion here: barbarians don’t hold up as a single class across all 20 levels of play.
10. Rogue. Moving on to the first decent class on this list, we have the rogue. Its first problem is a one-note combat ability. The class is completely reliant on its Sneak Attack feature for dealing damage, a conditional ability that means missing a single attack results in dealing no damage for an entire round.

1. Bard. It’s only fitting that the most flexible class benefits the most from the increased flexibility of multiclassing. On its own, the bard is already one of the strongest classes in the game, competing with wizards for the top spot.
2. Paladin. Speaking of paladins, let’s talk about the amazing combination they get from multiclassing with the warlock. As I hope my Hexstaff build demonstrates, warlock and paladin is a match made in the celestial plane.
3. Cleric. While I am a major proponent of playing classes the way you want, I also recognize that clerics are some of the better healers in 5E, specifically the Life cleric.
4. Sorcerer. We’re in the home stretch now, with classes that are transformed by the addition of multiclassing. The sorcerer starts us off with two dips that massively improve the class: paladin and warlock.
5. Wizard. There’s not much to say on this entry. Are there many multiclass builds that enhance the wizard? No, not really. Is the wizard still the most powerful monoclass in the game?
6. Rogue. What sort of dark mirror have we stepped into where I rank the rogue above classes like druid? Well, it just so happens that rogue has two builds that benefit hugely with just a hint of multiclassing.
7. Warlock. When I was first outlining this article and its companion monoclass rankings, I assumed that warlock would be one of the top entries on this list.
8. Druid. Don’t let the druid’s low placement on this list trick you – the class is still fantastic. However, it is one of the classes that benefits the least from multiclassing.
9. Barbarian. The barbarian was a hard entry to rank on this list. If I were taking a narrow focus at early and mid levels, this would be one of the top-ranking classes.
10. Fighter. Escaping the dregs of the last three entries, the fighter plays rear guard for worthwhile* classes. The fighter’s problem is that its feature set gains minimal benefit from dipping into other classes.
