1. Sand Hills. Sand Hills Golf Club is a club to respect and those in the know admire their non-commerciality and that is a delightful break from tradition these days
2. Dismal River (Red) The White was the first course to be unveiled at Dismal River Golf Club in 2006 and seven years later a complementary Tom Doak layout (the Red) opened to critical acclaim amongst the Nebraskan dunes.
3. Prairie Club (Dunes) Tom Lehman and architect Chris Brands designed the 18-hole Dunes golf course at The Prairie Club, an eminently walkable out-and-back layout with wide fairways and enormous greens.
4. Wild Horse. You’ll need to head for the prairies of Nebraska to play one of the best value courses in the US. The course at Wild Horse Golf Club was designed by Dave Axland & Dan Proctor – who have a track record of designing quality golf courses that are affordable
5. Omaha. Omaha Country Club was founded in 1899 but it relocated to its present site in 1926. It’s been suggested that Wayne Stiles and Johan Van Kleek designed the club’s new course when it moved but, in The Life and Work of Wayne Stiles, the authors beg to differ
6. Firethorn (North & South) The North and South nines form the premier 18-hole course at Firethorn Golf Club’s 27-hole facility. Built by Pete Dye, the old master described holes 11 to 14 as ”the best consecutive four holes I’ve ever designed”.
7. Prairie Club (Pines) Designed by Graham Marsh, the fairways of The Prairie Club’s Pines course weave in and out of the pine trees and sand hills that skirt the Snake River Canyon.
8. Dismal River (White) Located close to Sand Hills, the White course at Dismal River Golf Club is bound to draw comparison with this stellar layout. Some might say Jack Nicklaus proves with his 250th design that he can do minimalism after all.
9. ArborLinks. Located just outside Nebraska City, the lie-of-the-land course at ArborLinks was fashioned with minimal earth movement by Arnold Palmer prior to its unveiling in 2002.
10. Bayside Golf Club. Built by Dan Proctor and Dave Axland, two of the crew that constructed Sand Hills for Coore & Crenshaw in the mid-1990s, the course at Bayside Golf Club overlooks McConnaghy Lake, with views of its sparkling waters found on almost every hole.
