1. Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach. Pros: I'm a big fan of the scenery, playability, tournament history and exclusive feeling of Pebble Beach. I included playing Pebble Beach among the 25 things that should be on every golfer's "career bucket list."
2. Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Pebble Beach. Pros: My one round on Spyglass Hill was a certifiable disaster on the scorecard. My camera loved it, though, and you will, too.
3. Pasatiempo Golf Club, Santa Cruz. Pros: The premier Dr. Alister MacKenzie-designed golf course open to the public sends architecture buffs into a tizzy.
4. Cordevalle, San Martin. Pros: Cordevalle is a proven tournament site, having hosted the 2016 U.S. Women's Open and the Frys.com Open on the PGA Tour for several years.
5. The Links at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach. Pros: Spanish Bay was created by multiple contributing architects, including Tom Watson, to honor links golf overseas.
6. Saddle Creek Golf Resort, Copperopolis. Pros: Architect Carter Morrish took advantage of Saddle Creek's remote, rolling terrain in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains to create an interesting, enjoyable round of golf.
7. Schaffer's Mill Golf & Lake Club, Truckee. Pros: Since this is an exclusive private club, you will virtually have the place to yourself. Its back nine created by John Harbottle III and Johnny Miller is special with nice elevation changes and a variety of holes.
8. Yocha Dehe Golf Club, Brooks. Pros: I'm recommending this hidden gem by Brad Bell because it's so much fun to play and it's kept in such great shape by Troon Golf.
9. (tie) Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links and Old Course at Half Moon Bay, Half Moon Bay. Pros: The views on the wide-open Ocean Course are superior to the Old Course on the other side of the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, but I think the stronger finish essentially makes these courses a virtual deadlock.
10. Old Greenwood, Truckee. Pros: Jack Nicklaus built a beauty in the High Sierras. Water intrudes on six holes, but it's mostly the lovely setting of pines that will keep your attention.

1. San Francisco. Six and a half miles southwest from downtown San Francisco is 2020 PGA Championship venue TPC Harding Park, where a $24 million renovation spearheaded by prominent San Francisco lawyer and former USGA president Sandy Tatum, led by Chris Gray of the PGA Tour’s course design unit, and completed in the summer of 2003, revived Sam Whiting and Willie Watson’s disfigured original.
2. Monterey Peninsula. Besides the very private Cypress Point and Monterey Peninsula Country Club, there’s a lot of incredible public golf on the Peninsula, two hours south of San Francisco.
3. Los Angeles. The City of Angels is far better-known for its private golf (Riviera, Bel-Air, Los Angeles Country Club, Lakeside, Hillcrest, Wilshire, etc.)
4. San Diego. Tom Fazio’s course at The Grand, part of the exquisite Fairmont Grand Del Mar, has a number of excellent holes especially those that border Los Peñasquitos Canyon.
5. Palm Springs. Probably the best-known course in the Coachella Valley is Pete Dye’s Stadium Course at PGA West. Lambasted for being too nasty when it first hosted the Bob Hope Classic in 1987, the course has been softened somewhat, and now, with today’s equipment, is a stern but not excessive test for the pros.

1. Cypress Point (Pebble Beach) [1, 2] As Alister MacKenzie must have felt about his 1928 design, it’s almost inconceivable that land this stunning was made available for golf.
2. Pebble Beach (Pebble Beach) [1, 2, 3, P] The first great American public oceanside course, Pebble benefits from an ingenious routing that brings the player right to the ocean’s edge, then away into the woods, then back again.
3. Los Angeles – North (Los Angeles) [1, 2] Gil Hanse’s team restored George Thomas’s classic to perfection in 2010. Bunkers were reshaped and relocated, fairways were widened and re-shaped and a natural barranca was brought back into play as a strategic hazard.
4. Riviera (Pacific Palisades) [1, 2] The value of a good architect is highlighted here in technicolor. Built in a narrow canyon, there was no reason to hold high hopes for this course.
5. San Francisco (San Francisco) [1, 2] A.W. Tillinghast may have crafted his most gorgeous collection of bunkers at this low-key Bay Area hideaway that avoids publicity as steadfastly as its neighbor the Olympic Club embraces it.
6. California Golf Club of San Francisco (South San Francisco) [1, 2] For most of its 80-year history, the Cal Club, as locals call it, served up a tight though well-regarded Bay Area course, enhanced by its association with Ken Venturi.
7. Olympic – Lake (Daly City) [1] Always a delight to find a course that rewards the lost art of shaping shots. The 4th hole, for instance, features a reverse-camber fairway: the hole swings right to left but the fairway tilts left to right, mandating a draw from the tee.
8. Valley Club of Montecito (Montecito) [1] Designed by Alister MacKenzie with Robert Hunter overlooking construction, The Valley Club oozes charm. The holes don’t bully the player and length isn’t the issue but approaching these greens from the optimal side of the fairway is paramount, given the firmness of the playing surfaces that club routinely achieves.
9. Pasatiempo (Santa Cruz) [1, P] The 59th-ranked course on our Top 100 U.S. list was, according to Alister MacKenzie, the finest course he ever built. Unlike Cypress Point, just an hour south, Pasatiempo sits slightly inland, but its high points offer views of the Pacific and the entire routing, with its giant paw-print bunkers and large, undulating greens, make plain the influence that this course had on MacKenzie’s later work at Augusta National.
10. Monterey Peninsula – Shore (Pebble Beach) [1] Once a ho-hum layout that languished in the shadow of its famous 17-Mile Drive neighbors, the Shore Course started drawing notice in 2004 after the iconoclastic architect Mike Strantz built 12 new holes and overhauled six others.

1. CYPRESS POINT GOLF CLUB. Cypress Point is Alister Mackenzie’s masterpiece woven through cypress, sand dunes and jagged coastline. In the early 2000’s, member Sandy Tatum, the former USGA president who christened Cypress Point as the Sistine Chapel of golf, convinced the club not to combat technology by adding new back tees, but instead make a statement by celebrating its original architecture.
2. PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKS. Pebble Beach is not just the greatest meeting of land and sea in American golf, but the most extensive one too. Nine holes are placed immediately above the Pacific surf, including the 4 through 10, plus the 17 and 18.
3. SPYGLASS HILL GOLF COURSE. Having the task of designing a course only 17 miles from Pebble Beach and Cypress Point, Robert Trent Jones responded with a combination of Pine Valley and Augusta National.
4. MONTEREY PENINSULA COUNTRY CLUB. Course designer Mike Strantz was battling cancer while transforming the bland, low-budget Shore Course into a scenic and strategic marvel that rivals next-door neighbor Cypress Point.
5. MAYACAMA GOLF CLUB. Mayacama is a bold, 2001 Jack Nicklaus design that explores every facet of the oak-dotted hillsides above Santa Rosa, Mayacama slipped off America’s 100 Greatest in 2015, to No. 101, and returned to the list this year, despite having lost its putting surface turf in early 2016.
6. LAQUINTA RESORT AND CLUB. Laquinta is located in the exclusive Palm Springs region and calls out golfers with its scenic desert setting and elegant amenities.
7. PASATIEMPO GOLF CLUB. Pasatiempo was designed by Alister MacKenzie. It’s been open since 1929, with the first group to play through including Marion Hollins, Bobby Jones, Glenna Collett and Cyril Tolley.
8. THE RIVIERA. The golf history at Riviera is exemplary. The L.A. Open has been there for a. long time and the club has hosted a couple of major championships.
9. SANTA LUCIA PRESERVE. Santa Lucia was designed by Tom Fazio, Mike Poellet and Sandy Tatum. The course allows you to play challenging golf on a walk through the full gauntlet of nature at The Preserve.
10. TRUMP NATIONAL GOLF CLUB LOS ANGELES. Trump National has been labeled by some as the most spectacular golf course in America. The club is a real jewel for California’s public courses.
