You can also swap the Ranger with a Rogue, he is hidden somewhere in a cave, after one or another fight against Undead enemies. I am a purist as well and I would recommend pure Tank and hybrid Healer+Enchanter (Witch or Cleric, I'd say) as starting classes. Everything else you will pretty much get on your way through the game.
