Lots and lots of mud. All of these qualifiers mean that cross country training requires a special blend of endurance training, strength work and just enough speed to make it all count at the end.
For cross country student-athletes specifically, training is a combination of long-distance road work, trail runs, and track intervals to develop speed and endurance. An emphasis is also placed on running mechanics, recovery techniques, strength training, and nutrition.
Many runners who participate in cross country meets are members of a high school or college team and follow the training programs of their coaches. Others run free off-season.
