1. How to build endurance. An enduro race is not over in five minutes. In fact, it's often not over after five hours so endurance – as the name indicates – is key.
2. Get out on training rides. Heart rate monitors are useful for this style of training, as you don't need to go too hard or at a high intensity. Building your 'engine' at a biochemical level involves steady state, aerobic exercise, where lactate actually hinders some of the areas we are looking to establish so keep a rev limit on these rides, make them interesting, and cover a lot of ground.
3. Work on your downhill riding skills. Where a downhill race is focused on one track ridden at the highest speed, an enduro race often has six stages to be ridden at full speed so skills are key here.
4. Build strength in the gym. Although you need to cover a lot of ground over the course of an Enduro event, the stages themselves are at full pace and often similar in nature to a downhill stage.
5. Take nutrition seriously. To keep your energy levels up beyond two hours requires you to take in fuel along the way. Carbohydrate is king here, and having snacks, drinks and gels are all good ways to keep energy and performance up.

1. Work on your stamina. Hard Enduros aren’t called that for nothing, and if you’re planning to be spending six hours a day riding offroad, training for 20 minutes on a rowing machine before meeting the lads down the pub isn’t going to cut it.
2. Get yourself some TRX straps. Jonny may be built like the proverbial brick toilet block, but when we ask him how much time he spends in the weights room, his answer is surprising…
3. Don’t do arm exercises with weights. A rookie enduro rider might think they need to work on their arm strength to wrestle the bike into going where they want it.
4. Do squats. Imagine the scenario: you’re halfway up a mountain in remotest Romania and you’ve just dropped your bike for the 15th time that day. That’s the moment when time spent doing squats in the gym to strengthen your legs and back will really pay off – and it’s one of the few weights-based exercises that Jonny incorporates into his workout.
5. Get out and ride. While improving his training has been key to Jonny’s surge in form this year, there’s still no replacement for one of the key exercises for enduro riders – riding enduro!

1. My number one tip for Enduro Racing is to purposefully train your ability to stand up and pedal. The stages are short enough that you should be able to stand up and power through them and not rely on seated pedaling to get you through them.
2. Develop the mindset you need by trail riding at the pace you want to race at. This means that when you go for a trail ride you should be riding as hard for 10-20 minutes, stopping to rest and repeating rather than trying to go the whole time without stopping.
3. Technical mistakes are harder to overcome than in a longer race. During an 1.5 – 2 hour XC race you have a lot more time to make up for a lack of skills with your fitness.
