Peer support specialist. A certified peer support specialist, also known as a certified peer specialist, is a person with significant life-altering experience. This is also referred to as " lived experience ". These specialists support individuals with struggles pertaining to mental health, psychological trauma or substance use.
The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) Certificate is specifically designed for those with “lived experience” who consider themselves in recovery from a substance use or mental health disorder. Peer support includes relationship building in order to provide support, advocacy, wellness, and community engagement services to individuals.
Peer support programs work by offering people support, encouragement, and hope that recovery is possible. Peer support considers the wellness of the whole person and focuses on health and recovery rather than illness and disability, in order to assist people in finding their own path to recovery.
Peer support. Peer Support may be defined as the help and support that people with lived experience of a mental illness or a learning disability are able to give to one another.
