Cross-training is a force management program used primarily to balance the officer and enlisted career force inventories across all career fields, ensuring sustainability of career fields in support of Air Force mission priorities.
The Air Force Cross is the United States Air Force and United States Space Force's second highest military award for valor in combat. The medal is equivalent to the Army's Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy and Marine Corps' Navy Cross, and the Coast Guard Cross .

If you are not enlisting in a critical career field requiring a six-year contract, and you join as a truck mechanic with a four-year contract, it’s unlikely your contract will allow you to apply for cross-training during that hitch. This comes down to one major factor: Money.
