Educational Requirements, Certification, and Credentialing. According to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), athletic trainers hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree, while many have master's degrees, with a major in athletic training.
Typically, to become an athletic trainer, you must earn a bachelor's degree, which usually takes four years to complete.
Athletic trainers working as physician extenders can take patients' histories, perform data entry and the initial evaluation, initiate in-office rehabilitation exercises and, with additional certification, administer injections and assist in the operating room.
Terminology Tips "Athletic trainer" or "AT" are the preferred terms. Use AT as the abbreviation for athletic trainer. Do not use ATC/L, ATC/R, LATC or any other combination of ATC, as the credential is trademarked. NATA does not use the term "certified athletic trainers" unless the circumstance requires distinction.
